Day-36 (Final Day)

August 11, 2006

Beating the trail with back-tracking...

Photo by Motorrad Media The next morning James woke me up and told me we were going to do the last part of the trail backwards until we came to the spot where the rock slide was. At first I didn't really want to, with all the bad luck we had had I just didn't want to tip toe that edge anymore. I realized however that it meant a lot to James to finish it. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized it meant a lot to me too.

Riding the trail back was a pretty easy ride the only big problem we had was that James’s bike had finally had enough. The sub-frame cracked in half and a small piece of plastic was all that was holding the back part of his bike on. It seemed about on par with how things had been going. We reached the road where that landslide had been and discovered something that made me very happy I had listened to my instincts the day before. There was another rockslide about a mile down the road from the first one and this one was even more impassible. James and I turned our bikes around and rode back to town. I figured giving up that mile was our way of compensating with Mother Nature.

Photo by Motorrad MediaWhen we reached Port Orford at the end of the Trans-America Trail we got to ride our bikes on the beach and messed around a bit. I had wanted to ride on the beach all my life, so it was yet another goal met on this trip. James and I then took some time to reflect on what this trip had meant to us. We thought about all those we wished were with us - our family and friends, and most of all, our Father. We had done this trip in his memory and I knew when I rode away from that beach that we had done something our Dad would be proud of.

Everyone involved in this trip made it special. Our crew, our sponsors, all the people that helped us prepare and the amazing people we met along the way made this trip great. It was about the push to better ourselves — it was about meeting new people — it was about honoring our Father — it was about this great country and exploring what it has to offer to everyone if they’re willing to look for it.

It's going to be a great show and we hope you come along with us on...
