Mother
Nature gives us her best...
James decided that he wanted to take a detour from the trail
to visit Crater Lake. I was unsure about this move because we had
already lost a ton of time and it was definitely out of our way.
The
ride to get to Crater Lake was amazing though. Vast green forests
and snow capped mountains. The dirt roads were in good condition,
the weather was perfect. All together it was a great day of riding.
We
reached Crater Lake National Park in the mid-afternoon.
The mountains in the park were striking against the skyline. This
was pretty cool but I wanted to see the crater we had so hindered
ourselves to get a look at. The crater was nothing short of awe-inspiring.
It was gigantic and had the bluest water I had ever seen. I felt like
I could stare at it forever and still have been impressed.
The
chase vehicle had gone ahead and grabbed a camping area. We set up
the tents and relaxed for a bit then headed to see another natural
wonder of the park, the pinnacles. They pinnacles are giant baked
dirt columns that used to be vents for hot gases escaping the earth.
They weren't as impressive as the crater but still it was another
unique site I was able to see on this trip. We headed back to camp
and cooked up some hotdogs and marshmallows. It was a great night
of laughing with the guys and resting up. I knew we needed it because
the next day we needed to get to the Pacific Ocean and it was a long
ways away.
