Day-33

Oregon
was not a victory lap...
We set aside the morning to do some much needed maintenance
on the bikes. It was then that I discovered that my license
plate had been ripped off. I still have no idea what happened to it.
Then it started to rain so we decided to grab some lunch and waited
for it to stop. The rain finally stopped around noon and we set off
for our first full day of riding in Oregon.
Unfortunately
James’s gas tank once again had other plans. It started
to leak gas at an alarming rate and we realized the fuel
pet-cock wouldn't shut off. We spent the next several hours trying
to figure out a way to stop it. In the process of trying to figure
out what to do James and I went at it again. Our tempers were definitely
getting the best of us.
I
also realized that James and I really hadn't had that much time to
hang out just as bothers. One of my main goals was to try to enjoy
as much time with James as I could. With nine years between us, James
was either at college or living out of town since I have been old
enough to really have a bonding experience with him.
James
was finally able to figure out a way to stop the fuel leak by blocking
the fuel cock off with a stick he cut up with his pocket knife. We
had lost so much time however that we had to jump on the highway and
make our way our next meeting point.
The ride was frigid and we were low on gas. At any minute we expected
our bikes to come to a puttering stop. Five miles from the town James'
bike, having lost half of its gas before we even started riding, gave
up and ran out of gas. We pulled over to the side
of the road and called the chase vehicle. Chris and Mathew drove out
to rescue us with a full gas can. James got the gas he needed and
we road on, shivering, into town ready for a warm meal and a very
hot shower.
