Life
in Baker Nevada & Riding the Pony Express Trail...
We needed an internet connection to help us lock down our
remaining overnight stays for the rest of the trip. Chris
and I spent the morning in the office of the Border Inn Motel trying
to make arrangements with the help of Denise, the owner of the Inn.
Denise was very helpful and a very nice lady.
We
had to wait an extra day in Baker Nevada for the UPS delivery of our
tires, parts and supplies. While we were waiting we decided to look
into the local area more intently and learned that Las Vegas wants
to take water from Baker area. The residents of the area are furious
about it because they think the water pumping will kill their water
aquifer and rightly so as they live in a desert.
The
UPS truck finally shows up around 5:45 P.M. and says he’s got
some big supplies for us - turns out he’s got boxes for everybody
but us. No knobby tires and we need them! We’ve
lost another day, we’re already behind schedule, and we didn’t
even get our supplies.
As
frustrated as we were, Denise showed us a fun route that would be
off the pavement on the old “Pony Express” and would get
us to Battle Mountain and closer to being back on schedule.
Steve
and I got to goof-off together riding like freestyle punks without
catching air, while riding on the historical trail. This really was
a treat! And by the way, I have a very impressive Running Man! (Well,
not really).
Then
we came across a great couple who have a truck-stop restaurant in
the middle of nowhere with a foosball table. I love foosball and Chris
was nice enough to play a few games with me. It was a very unique
place to stop and take in the environment. The place literally was
in the middle of nowhere. Yet they had a flock of Peacocks living
outside and a museum of Dead Cougar pictures with hunters holding
their carcasses. The couple was nice enough to entertain us with their
stories while we ate. Then we hit the road and dragged into Battle
Mt. at around 2 A.M. in the morning. Sleep was very welcome.
