Pontooning Greer's Ferry Lake...
After Steven’s accident yesterday, we decided to stay
at the Greer’s Ferry Campground in Choctaw Arkansas an extra
day. This day was to be a recovery day beginning with a much
needed sleep-in. However, our happy slumber was violently disrupted
by our camping neighbor revving his Harley at 8 am. Although somewhat
disgruntled because you don’t get a lot of sleep when you’re
working 24/7, everyone got up and got busy. Chris and James went into
town to find a motorcycle shop to get new handlebars for Steven’s
bike, Steven hit the lake with Mathew for some fishing, and Michael
worked on the web site. It may have been Mathew’s first time
fishing but Steven was the big winner catching what was estimated
to be a 14” Large Mouth Bass. The locals were very impressed
saying it was one of the biggest catches they’ve seen.
James and Chris were not able to find a bike shop that would work
for their purposes. They did however, come across a Harley shop that
was interested
in
the project and graciously exchanged a pocket bible and three “pennies
from heaven” (a penny with a cross cut out of it to keep each
of the three riders safe) for a couple of "Road Less Traveled
Movie" T-shirts. That afternoon while milling around the Marina,
James ran into some wonderful people who took him, Steven, and Mathew
out on there Pontoon boat for a tour around Greer’s Ferry Lake
in exchange for a tank of gas. On top of the incredible scenery and
views, the guys saw an eagle’s nest, and they dove from a 25
foot bluff, and also saw one of only three huge bridges that cross
the lake. James was concerned about Steven jumping off the bluff with
his hurt knee and after only a couple of jumps convinced Steven to
take it easy back on the boat.
After
three straight days of 105 degree temperatures, the night
was very hot, very humid and very buggy. It became very obvious why
they say the Arkansas State Bird is "the mosquito". We all
got some nasty bug bites that night and looked forward to leaving
the campsite in the morning.
