Columbia Tennessee to Selmer Tennessee...
Today
started out like most days. Early to rise as everyone did what they
could to get the riders on the road. Arriving to our final
destination late at night, after a full days ride, is far from desirable.
The only way to finish the day earlier is to start earlier. So it
was our earnest attempt to get the riders off as soon as possible.
We thought we had done pretty well too until we later learned that
the riders had departed from the hotel, only to ride across the street
to the Waffle House for "brunch". They didn’t end
up leaving Columbia until after noon! And today was to be a long trek
for the riders too.
Mathew
and Chris needed to detour from their route again to pick up some
more necessities. The nearest town that had what they needed, although
on an interstate, was many miles in the opposite direction of where
they had planned to go. But after an easy interstate drive, a fairly
efficient shopping run (and a visit to the local Piggly Wiggly) they
were back on track. Fairly confident that the riders would be several
hours later than they planned, Chris and Mathew felt comfortable with
the detour. However, it soon became obvious that they too were going
to have trouble getting to meeting spot in time. The riders and the
chase vehicle was supposed to rendezvous in Saltillo Tennessee (pronounced
"Salt-Tillo") for dinner. This time it was the chase vehicle
that would come in late.
After
a call to the riders, Chris and Mathew realized that they would in
fact reach Saltillo well before the riders. This was not good considering
that the plan was to film Saltillo, the sun was beginning to set already,
and they still had a ways to go. Finally, the chase vehicle arrived
at Saltillo but the riders could not be reached due to poor cell phone
reception. Making a decision to head back where they were likely to
have reception, back towards the interstate (about 30-miles away),
the chase vehicle once again set out in an attempt to communicate
with the riders.
Upon
reaching the highway and not being able to contact the riders, Chris
and Mathew decided to get something to eat. Shortly after ordering
their food though, they received a call from James, Steven and Michael
who were just a few miles away in the next town, also eating dinner.
After scarfing some food down, we finally connected and drove into
Selmer Tennessee. It is late but we’ve finally found a decent
hotel to bunk down for the night. We’ll let you know what happens
next but right now, after another long day and late arrival, we’re
going to bed.
